Private Dwelling, York

This property was designed in 1955 by a Dutch Architect: Jan Van Erven Doren who was commissioned by the original owner because of their love of Dutch architecture and was completed in the late 1950’s.

The house is in the traditional C20 Dutch style with sweeping steeply pitched tiled roofs, deep overhanging eaves, swept eye-brow dormers and small element windows.

The building is not Listed but lies within the York Conservation Area.

The owner wished to make provision for bedroom and bathroom accommodation on the ground floor. There are no existing ground floor rooms suitable for adaptation to these uses.

The new extension is to match the existing building in all respects ie. mass, materials, fenestration etc. The plain tiled steeply pitched roof will have swept junctions where the ridge reduces from the height of the main block to match the detail of the east wing. The new north side dormer will have the same eye-brow plain tiled detailing, stained timber boarding and windows as the adjacent fenestration.

The proposed extension will create a new wing to the main house, mirroring the existing east end (garage) wing. The existing studio will be replaced (originally an external loggia).

The stainless steel flat roofed canopy is to be extended beyond the eaves to follow the curved line of the existing steps. Within this curved elevation, large glazed openings are to be formed within substantial timber frames to match the existing details and the existing tapered timber posts from the studio are to be re-used.
