This church is an outstanding example of Victorian church design by William Butterfield for Vicount Downe, built in 1856-8.
The tower and spire at about 48m (165ft) is probably the highest in the county and was found to be in a bad state of repair.
English Heritage grant aided repairs in 2005 included external and internal stonework repairs and repointing, overhaul of the apex ironwork and weathervane, and new louvres in the openings to reduce internal airflow which had caused severe stonework erosion.
