Middlethorpe Hall |
Prior to being purchased in 1980 by Historic House Hotels, this country house was being used as a nightclub and was in appalling condition. Along with the hall, stables and dovecote, the land was acquired and a start made to maintain the property. Under Ferrey & Mennim’s guidance, gradually the building was repaired, added to and subtly altered to create a five star hotel containing 32 bedrooms, 2 restaurants, a conference centre and staff accommodation.
The house is a Grade II* listed building under the Town and Country Planning Act and is situated by the side of York racecourse.
This has been one of Yorkshire’s successes in the hotel world, winning a Queens award for export in the process and five architectural awards.
In 1997 we were commissioned to design and project manage a new leisure complex extension to an existing building, and are currently assisting with gaining local authority consents for minor alterations.
‘The idea of the country-house hotel is increasingly fashionable today, but to make a first class hotel out of a country house without destroying its character is very difficult – Middlethorpe Hall has set the standards for others to follow.’
Country Life
‘Though no longer a family home, Middlethorpe Hall retains an essentially private personality.’
