All Saints Church, Mappleton

All Saints Church, Mappleton stands about a quarter of a mile from the Holderness coat to the south of Hornsea. In the spring of 2002 restraining bands on the capstone of the spire snapped and subsequently the structure was deemed unsafe and the church closed pending repairs. Fortunately English Heritage provided a very generous grant following speedy negotiations and we produced a specification and obtained tenders so that work on dismantling and re-building commenced in December 2002. The top three metres of the spire were removed and re-built with a new capstone and retaining rod, the remainder of the spire was repaired and re-pointed and the lower parts of the tower were also re-pointed. The work involved full scaffolding and the operatives had at times to endure very extreme weather conditions with winds blowing in from the North Sea.
The work was completed within budget in August 2003 and the church brought back into use shortly after.
