St Denys Church, York

This Grade 1 listed church, containing the oldest stained glass in York and with a chequered history, was on the English Heritage Buildings at Risk Register prior to extensive repairs carried out, so far, over two phases.
Phase 1, completed in 2000 included repair of the tower, including complete rebuilding and reinforcement of the stone in the parapets, consolidation of extensively voided walling below the tower roof level, re-covering of the slate tower roof and lead parapet gutters, general stone repairs and repointing, repairs to the Victorian cast framed windows and glass, consolidation and internal re-plastering of the turret stair and overhaul of the bell mechanisms and fittings.
Phase 2 has involved masonry repairs to the south aisle and conservation of the south porch Norman doorway, structural tying of the walls affected by thermal creep and voiding, re-glazing of the windows and isothermal glazing of the valuable 13th and 14th century stained glass.
A further phase is planned to consolidate and repair the north aisle masonry, point-up movement cracking and re-decorate internally and further glazing repairs, particularly to the "Jesse tree" east window.
Following the completion of phase 2 it is hoped that English Heritage will be able to take the church off the Risk Register.
