St. Mary’s Church, Doncaster

Situated in the Wheatley Hall District of Doncaster this Grade II church has a very active congregation who needed new facilities for social events and playgroups to be used in close association with the church.
The design brief asked for a main meeting hall, which could be sub-divided into two rooms for playgroups and other classes. Storage for equipment needed to be easily accessible with serving facilities from a separate well-equipped kitchen. A second meeting room was required for quieter activities together with male, female and disabled toilets all to be easily accessible from the main body of the church.
The new extension was linked to the church by a vestibule with a patent glazed roof.
In awarding the Design Award Commendation, Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council commented: “The assessors thought that the scale and proportions are excellent and that the scheme has given new life to the original church.
The new hall has been a great success and continues to be used for many activities.

The project was completed in 1989
